Our daughter, Olivia Royce, was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome after multiple prolonged seizures at just 7 months old. Dravet Syndrome is a lifelong catastrophic form of epilepsy. Her seizures are severe, drug resistant, and cause her oxygen levels to plummet. Unfortunately it is not just seizures Olivia will have to overcome each day. She was also diagnosed with dysautonomia (disruptions of the autonomic nervous system which can lead to difficulty regulating body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and other issues). During the second/third year of life most with Dravet will experience developmental delays, movement and balance issues, and chronic infections. The risk of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) is a constant fear for families like ours. SUDEP and accident-related deaths are the leading causes of death in persons with Dravet syndrome. To protect Olivia, we have oxygen at home, movement detection camera & alert system and pulse oximeter. We are now raising funds to acquire a seizure alert dog for Olivia. A seizure alert dog would mean everything for Olivia and our family. Olivia has multiple types of seizures, both while awake and asleep. Her longest seizure lasted on and off for 7 hours. They sedated and intubated her around the two hour mark after not being able to get the seizure to stop and her stats were not stable. Her seizure continued to break through the sedation for the next 5 hours. As if that wasn’t enough, she developed hypothermia due to her dysautonomia. The faster we can administer her rescue medication and oxygen, the more we can protect her brain. Not only could an alert save her life; we hope that as Dravet progresses, the service dog will also improve her quality of life. We have chosen to have our dog trained by Mike Burkel. Mike has professionally trained over 200 dogs. After speaking to another mother whose child also has Dravet and had their dog trained by Mike, it solidified our decision. Thank you taking the time to read a little about our fighter’s story and greatly appreciate any help you may offer. All donations will be directly applied towards the purchase and training of our certified seizure alert dog
